define & describe empathy -
1. Everyone knows what empathy means. It is being able to feel and understand the emotions of others. It is the ability to be able to relate to how someone is feeling whether that be positive or negative. When we feel empathic towards someone, we almost feel their pain or their feelings ourselves. "Social awareness includes empathy (attunement to the thoughts and feelings of others.)" (Bolman & Deal, 2021, p. 172) There are situations that will arise in business where the trait empathy is more than necessary to have.

There are numerous attributes that are needed in order to be a good leader but empathy is one of them and it is sometimes not mentioned enough. 3. It is important for professors to touch on empathy. As I have said before, majority of us know what empathy means in a general sense. That's why it is so crucial for professors to show us how it is applied in a work setting. A leader needs to be able to read a room and decipher if something has upset someone. A leader needs to be able to understand when someone is disgruntled. This is just a few reasons why it is so vital for professors to teach us about empathy in the business world.

4. I already have a strong empathy when it comes to my friends, family, coworkers, etc. I understand what it means to be empathetic and how important it is. However, Arizona State University has been able to show me how to apply empathy in the workplace. Additionally, the courses I have been taking have also emphasized the importance of emotional intelligence. Everyone should be aware of their own emotional intelligence which includes empathy and leaders should know how this can be useful in a leadership role.
